History
Costa Rica was colonized by the Spaniards, who first came to Costa Rica in the 16th century after Cristobal Colon (Christopher Columbus), who landed on the Atlantic coast, in the province today known as Limon, in 1502.
The country gained its independence from Spain on September, 15th, 1821, and today this holiday is regarded with great tradition, as "Independence Day".

After a Civil War in 1848, the new Constitution was established in 1949, which is still in effect today. It included the prohibition of national armed forces, and today the country still does not have any army, only a police force. |
